Explorando los Bosques Tropicales de Colombia: Un viaje Hacia la Sostenibilidad

Este año, nuestros estudiantes de Prejardín se embarcaron en un proyecto para explorar los tres bosques tropicales de Colombia: el bosque de niebla, el bosque húmedo tropical y el bosque seco tropical. A través de esta experiencia, los niños desarrollaron una comprensión más profunda sobre la diversidad y fragilidad de estos ecosistemas, al tiempo que reflexionaron sobre el papel que cada uno puede asumir para protegerlos.

Durante el año, los estudiantes aprendieron sobre las características únicas de cada bosque: cómo la niebla del bosque de niebla sustenta una vegetación exuberante; cómo el bosque húmedo tropical es fundamental para mitigar el cambio climático al absorber CO₂ de la atmósfera; y cómo el bosque seco se adapta a prolongadas estaciones secas. A medida que exploraban estos ecosistemas, creció en ellos un aprecio genuino por su valor y por la urgencia de preservarlos.

Uno de los mayores logros del proyecto fue su conexión con la sostenibilidad. Los niños reflexionaron sobre cómo acciones cotidianas —como reducir el uso de plásticos, conservar el agua y tomar decisiones amigables con el medio ambiente— pueden contribuir a la protección de estos ecosistemas. Aprendieron que la sostenibilidad no es solo un asunto global, sino también local y personal. Al comprender que incluso los gestos más pequeños tienen un impacto significativo, se sintieron motivados a actuar con mayor conciencia en su vida diaria.

Al acercarse el final del año escolar, los estudiantes se preparan para presentar sus Portafolios de Aprendizaje, una colección de sus obras de arte y reflexiones, que compartirán con sus familias durante las presentaciones finales. Estos portafolios no solo evidencian su conocimiento, sino también las conexiones personales que han formado con el medio ambiente.

Este proyecto demostró que la educación puede ser una poderosa fuerza de cambio. Al aprender sobre los bosques de Colombia, los estudiantes no solo estudiaron ecosistemas: se convirtieron en parte activa del esfuerzo por protegerlos. Y al hacerlo, nos recordaron que la sostenibilidad empieza con la conciencia y que el verdadero impacto comienza en casa.

Exploring Colombia’s Tropical Forests: A Journey Toward Sustainability

This year, our Prekindergarten students embarked on a meaningful learning journey exploring Colombia’s three tropical forests: the Cloud Forest, the Tropical Rainforest, and the Tropical Dry Forest. Through this project, they developed a deeper understanding of the diversity and fragility of these ecosystems, while reflecting on the role each of us plays in protecting them.

Throughout the year, students discovered the unique characteristics of each forest: how the mist in the cloud forest supports lush vegetation, how the tropical rainforest plays a key role in mitigating climate change by absorbing CO₂ from the atmosphere, and how the dry forest adapts to long dry seasons. As they explored these environments, their appreciation for the value of nature and the urgency to preserve it grew stronger.

One of the most powerful aspects of this project was its connection to sustainability. Students reflected on how simple, everyday actions—such as reducing plastic use, conserving water, and making eco-conscious choices—can contribute to the protection of these ecosystems. They realized that sustainability is not just a global concern; it’s also a local and personal responsibility. This understanding empowered them to take meaningful actions in their daily lives.

As the school year comes to a close, students are preparing their Learning Presentation Portfolios—a collection of their artwork and personal reflections. These will be shared with families during the final learning presentations, highlighting both their knowledge and the deep connections they’ve made with the environment.

This project has demonstrated that education can be a powerful force for change. By learning about Colombia’s forests, students didn’t just study ecosystems—they became part of the effort to protect them. And in doing so, they reminded us all that sustainability begins with awareness and that meaningful impact starts at home.
