Desde el inicio del programa el 29 de enero de 2024, los 23 estudiantes de la Institución Educativa Oficial de Fonquetá que vienen de Lunes a Jueves a las instalaciones del Colegio Rochester como beneficiarios del Programa Inglés para Chía, han demostrado un progreso notable en su aprendizaje del inglés. A lo largo de este primer año, se han enfocado los esfuerzos en desarrollar las cuatro habilidades fundamentales: comprensión lectora, expresión escrita, comprensión auditiva y expresión oral.
En el salón, se utiliza el inglés al 100%, y es un motivo de orgullo informar que el 98% de los estudiantes son capaces de seguir y dar respuestas apropiadas a las instrucciones de la Profesora, Lilian Hincapié. Este es un indicador claro de su crecimiento en la comprensión auditiva y su capacidad para interactuar en inglés.
Unidad 1: Mi Colegio En la primera unidad, los estudiantes desarrollaron habilidades sociales esenciales, como saludar y presentarse. Aprendieron a identificar y nombrar objetos en el salón de clases, describir colores y cantidades, y utilizar expresiones cotidianas como "Gracias" y "De nada".
Unidad 2: La Naturaleza En la segunda unidad, los niños continuaron avanzando al aprender a identificar objetos en la naturaleza, hablar sobre elementos naturales y formular preguntas sobre la ubicación de estos objetos.
Unidad 3: Mi Familia En la tercera unidad, se enfocaron en el vocabulario familiar, aprendiendo a nombrar y describir a los miembros de la familia, así como a hablar sobre ellos y utilizar números para referirse a su familia.
Unidad 4: Mi Casa En la cuarta unidad, los estudiantes aprenderán a describir personas, lugares, cosas y eventos familiares, así como a identificar las partes de una casa y los elementos dentro de ella. Además, aprenderán a hacer y responder preguntas para buscar ayuda, obtener información o aclarar algo que no entienden.
Además de los temas que abarca el libro, se han abordado conceptos prácticos en un contexto académico seguro y divertido. Gracias a esta metodología, el 98% de los estudiantes hoy sabe pedir sus materiales en inglés, reconocen preposiciones como "in", "on" y "under", y son capaces de expresar cuando no tienen un color o un elemento en su cartuchera. También saben pedir permiso para ir al baño, pedir su bebida en el almuerzo, entre otras expresiones que hacen parte de su cotidianidad Rochesteriana.
Indudablemente, se han presentado retos, especialmente al inicio, mientras los estudiantes se acoplaban a la rutina del colegio. Sin embargo, con el tiempo han aprendido a reconocer las dinámicas de clase y ahora el ritmo de aprendizaje es más rápido. El compromiso y entusiasmo de los niños por aprender han sido inspiradores, y estamos seguros de que continuarán avanzando en su camino hacia el bilingüismo. Este programa no solo les proporciona habilidades lingüísticas, sino que también fomenta su autoestima y habilidades sociales, preparándolos para un futuro brillante.
En la Fundación Educativa Rochester esperamos poder continuar con este maravilloso programa los próximos 3 años que faltan, en un esfuerzo conjunto de colaboración con el equipo del Colegio Rochester, y gracias a la financiación de entidades como WOOD, para lograr así seguir viendo el avance de cada uno de estos pequeños estudiantes.
Academic Achievements and Progress in the “English for Chia” Program

Since the beginning of the program on January 29, 2024, the 23 students of the Official Educational Institution of Fonquetá who come Monday through Thursday to the Rochester School facilities as beneficiaries of the English for Chía Program, have shown remarkable progress in their English learning. Throughout this first year, efforts have been focused on developing the four fundamental skills: reading comprehension, written expression, listening comprehension and oral expression.
In the classroom, English is used 100%, and it is with pride that I can report that 98% of the students are able to follow and give appropriate responses to the instructions of the teacher, Lilian Hincapié. This is a clear indicator of their growth in listening comprehension and their ability to interact in English.
Unit 1: My School
In the first unit, students developed essential social skills, such as greeting and introducing themselves. They learned to identify and name objects in the classroom, describe colors and quantities, and use everyday expressions such as “Thank you” and “You're welcome.”
Unit 2: Nature
In the second unit, the children continued to make progress by learning to identify objects in nature, talk about natural elements, and ask questions about the location of these objects.
Unit 3: My Family
In the third unit, the students focused on family vocabulary, learning to name and describe family members, as well as talk about them and use numbers to refer to their family.
Unit 4: My House
In the fourth unit, students will learn to describe familiar people, places, things, and events, as well as identify the parts of a house and the elements in a house. In addition, they will learn to ask and answer questions to seek help, get information, or clarify something they don't understand.
In addition to the topics covered in the book, practical concepts have been addressed in a safe and fun academic context. Thanks to this methodology, 98% of students today know how to ask for their materials in English, recognize prepositions such as “in”, “on” and “under”, and are able to express when they do not have a color or an item in their pencil case. They also know how to ask for permission to go to the bathroom, order a drink at lunch, among other expressions that are part of their everyday Rochesterian life.
Undoubtedly, there have been challenges, especially at the beginning, as the students adjusted to the school routine. However, over time they have learned to recognize the classroom dynamics and now the pace of learning is faster. The children's commitment and enthusiasm for learning has been inspiring, and we are confident that they will continue to progress on their path to bilingualism. This program not only provides them with language skills, but also builds their self-esteem and social skills, preparing them for a bright future.
We at the Rochester Educational Foundation hope to be able to continue this wonderful program for the next 3 years, in a joint collaborative effort with the Rochester School team, and thanks to funding from entities such as WOOD, in order to continue to see the progress of each of these young students.
