Rochester School celebrated its 63 years of foundation and does so with the satisfaction of seeking excellence in each of what it considers its fundamental pillars, from what has been defined as its Strategic Intent: Healthy and Sustainable Environment, with Useful and Quality Learning for Life and the World, and with Inner Responsibility towards Happiness and Success.” This way, it honors its Institutional Purpose which is defined as Inspiring and educating students to take control of their lives with the world in mind.
Rochester School was founded on February 6, 1959 by Olga León de Aljure, her mother Isabel Agustí de León and her aunt Cecilia Agustí Pastor, who dreamed of a bilingual educational project to create a Catholic, coeducational institution, with high academic performance and values education, including arts and sports, for what they considered then as a basis for an integral education. Health and wellness have always been fundamental pillars since its foundation.
Those were definitely other times, when discovering the world was, by all accounts, an almost impossible luxury for most Colombians. The world was light years away from our country. But then, we applaud the greatness of its three visionary founders, capable of imagining a world that 63 years later, thanks to the leadership of Daniel Aljure and his children, Patricia, Iliana and Juan Pablo, as well as that of Patricia León, Olga’s younger sister, who assumed the position of Principal for 11 years after her sister’s death, would be within reach and at the hand of students from Pre-School to Eleventh Grade. Having started as a Pre-K through 5th Grade school in 1979, the school received approval from the Ministry of National Education to open high school, with its first high school graduates in 1984.
Imagining it was, of course, the driver that motivated all members of the community to work with strength, discipline and creativity. But getting this far has required a titanic effort, involving two generations of people throughout its incredible history.
“Having the world in mind” -as stated by its Institutional Purpose- in the year 2022 requires being aware of the planet we live on. For Juan Pablo Aljure, its current President, Electronic Engineer from Texas A&M University, climate leader of the “Climate Reality Project”, Master in Environmental Resources Management and Master in Education, the environmental responsibility of Rochester School has been a healthy obsession that is noticeable in every physical detail of the campus and in the behavior of the members of its community. Jorge Quintero, as Sustainability Director, and through various Environmental and Social Projects, has been the right hand of the President in these matters, and thanks to an excellent team, it was possible to build a green and sustainable campus that opened its doors to the new site in September 2012, with LEED GOLD recertification awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), which makes it the most sustainable educational institution in Latin America. Its Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the mechanical system of continuous air renewal in each of the classrooms, the use of organic and healthy materials (paints, woods, etc….. ) inside the buildings, solar panels for the optimization of energy use, LED lights throughout the campus, orchards and natural environments that become living classrooms to learn about ecosystems and the different conservation, education and solidarity projects, led by the Rochester Educational Foundation (FER), whereby students become the main protagonists in the use of the campus as a living text, are the greatest testimony of such commitment. “Education is the key to transform the way we live. Today, more than ever, we must sow in children and young people the culture of a sustainable life, where planting trees, working with renewable energies or recycling, are natural tasks. That is our mission at Rochester School,” indicates Juan Pablo Aljure.
Having the world in mind requires a work team led and composed by the Principal Alethia Bogoya, Electrical Engineer from Universidad Nacional, with a Master’s Degree in English Language Teaching – Autonomous Learning Environments from Universidad de La Sabana and currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico, 3 Relationship Directors, 2 Academic Directors, 9 Curricular Directors, 1 Research and Development Coordinator, 1 Professional Development Director, 1 Digital Consultant, 1 Director of the Student Wellness Center and 1 Consultant in Schools based on Educational Technology, 9 Curricular Directors, 1 Research and Development Coordinator, 1 Professional Development Director, 1 Digital Consultant, 1 Director of the Student Wellness Center and 1 Consultant in Choice Theory based schools, who are focused on the fulfillment of the Strategic Intent mentioned in the first paragraph and the four Guiding Statements of the school, which are composed of:

Nowadays, it is vital to know and manage the technologies and tools that are available to everyone, but this requires a responsible management in order not to grant them the wrong power. Rochester School, thanks to the vision of the Presidency, the execution of the Principal and the guidance of Natalia León, Digital Learning Consultant, has made great efforts and investments to be at the forefront of technology, allowing all students, including the youngest, to have the ability to open the window to this world of endless possibilities, but always with ethical criteria from digital citizenship. Actions such as the “Bring Your Own Device” program, which was implemented from 4th to 12th Grade in August 2019; the digital training that has been given to teachers to be able to have today 90% of educators certified as Apple Teachers,a as well as the use of digital learning platforms which the school has been implementing for some years now, have been not only a lifesaver with the unexpected arrival of virtuality, one of the passports for students to travel the world, physical and virtual, with peace of mind and ease.
Another essential credential when it comes to “having the world in mind” is languages. Six decades ago, the founders were clear that English was a fundamental language in a global society; today, French and Portuguese are part of the school’s curriculum, since learning other languages is the most versatile tool to discover and understand different cultures, to be open to dialogue and reconciliation, and to be able to move naturally in a changing and globalized world. Essential questions such as, “How can we solve current problems, such as wars, migrations and diseases?”, are asked daily from the language curricula. The Academic Director of grades 5th to 12th, and Curricular Director of English, Dana Pao, states that “schools play a central role in the development of society, generating in students the competencies and skills to move in a globalized world where they must be open to dialogue and to listento and understand the perspectives and beliefs of others. To such end, the first thing is to understand their language, both verbal and non-verbal”.
Following the founders’ vision of a comprehensive education, the development of arts in all its forms, and sports with its multiple possibilities, continue to be a fundamental pillar at school, which has the “Inspira Artistic Center”, a soccer field, 4 multi-sport courts and 2 swimming pools. The Artistic Center, led by Iliana Aljure, a Bacteriologist from Universidad de los Andes, with a Master’s Degree in Dance Education from New York University and a Certificate in Brain-Compatible Pedagogy from the Jensen Learning Corporation, who has worked for 34 years in favor of the artistic development of students, both in curricular and extracurricular areas, offers education programs for students and teachers, promoting processes of artistic creation and innovation, from recreational to high performing activities in dance, music, theater and visual arts. The Aquatic Center houses two swimming pools for students and adults, since the practice of swimming has always been a priority since its founders; the heating of these pools is done through solar panels, achieving the desired energy savings with the change in 2012 to this new site. Its multiple courts for basketball, soccer and volleyball practice are examples of the special emphasis given to sports. The school deems it essential to develop artistic and athletic talents. to foster cognitive, social, emotional, physical and spiritual balance of its students, which has a significant impact on their overall health.
Finally, keeping the world in mind means that neither the planet, nor the world’s problems, nor those of others, are responsible for our happiness. With Choice Theory, developed by the North American psychiatrist William Glasser, we have learned to choose and maintain healthy relationships with those around us and with our natural environment, in order to build a life where happiness and mental health are our priority.
Congratulations Rochester School on its 63rd birthday! Not in vain, throughout its history, it has received multiple awards, certifications and recognitions from the government and various entities. Certifications such as EFQM with 4 stars, Glasser Quality School, Member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) and GREAT PLACE TO STUDY, are some of the recognitions obtained for its environmental and academic leadership.

El Colegio Rochester celebra sus 63 años de fundado y lo hace con la satisfacción de buscar la excelencia en cada uno de los que considera sus pilares fundamentales, desde lo que ellos han definido como su Intención Estratégica: Ambiente saludable y sostenible, con Aprendizaje Útil y de Calidad para la Vida y el Mundo, y con Responsabilidad Interior hacia la Felicidad y el Éxito. De esta manera, honran suPropósito Institucional que se define como Inspiramos y educamos estudiantes a tomar el control de sus vidas con el mundo en mente.
El Colegio Rochester fue fundado el 6 de febrero de 1959 por Olga León de Aljure, su madre Isabel Agustí de León y su tía Cecilia Agustí Pastor, quienes soñaron con un proyecto educativo bilingüe para crear una institucióncatólica, mixta, con alto rendimiento académico y formación en valores, incluyendo el arte y el deporte, para lo que ellas consideraban en ese momento como una base para laformación integral. La salud y el bienestar han sido siempre pilares fundamentales desde su fundación.
Eran definitivamente otros tiempos, en los que conocer el mundo era, a todas luces, un lujo casi imposible para la mayoría de los colombianos. El mundo se encontraba a años luz de nuestro país. Pero entonces, se aplaude la grandeza de sus tres fundadoras visionarias, capaces de imaginar un mundo, que 63 años después, gracias al liderazgo de Daniel Aljure y sus hijos, Patricia, Iliana y Juan Pablo, al igual que el de Patricia León, hermana menor de Olga, quien asumió el cargo de Rectora por 11 años después del fallecimiento de su hermana, estaría al alcance y a la mano de estudiantes desde Preescolar hasta Undécimo Grado. Habiendo comenzado como un colegio de Prejardín a 5º Grado, en 1979, el colegio recibió la aprobación del Ministerio de Educación Nacional, para abrir el bachillerato, ofreciendo sus primeros bachilleres en 1984.
Imaginarlo fue, por supuesto, el motor que impulsó a todos los miembros de la comunidad a trabajar con fuerza, disciplina y creatividad. Pero llegar hasta aquí ha requerido de un esfuerzo titánico, en el que han intervenido dos generaciones de personas a lo largo de su increíble historia.
“Tener el mundo en mente” –como reza su Propósito Institucional– en el año 2022 requiere ser conscientes del planeta en el que vivimos. Para Juan Pablo Aljure, su actual Presidente, Ingeniero Electrónico de Texas A&M University, líder climático del “Climate Reality Project”, Magister en Gestión de Recursos Ambientales y Magister en Educación, la responsabilidad ambiental del Colegio Rochester ha sido una sana obsesión que se nota en cada detalle físico del campus y en el comportamiento de los miembros de su comunidad. Desde la Dirección de Sostenibilidad y mediante varios Proyectos Ambientales y Sociales, Jorge Quintero ha sido la mano derecha del Presidente en estos temas, y gracias a un excelente equipo de trabajo, se logró la construcción de un campus verde y sostenible que abrió las puertas de su nueva sede en septiembre de 2012, con recertificación LEED OROotorgada por el Consejo Estadounidense de Construcción Sostenible (USGBC), lo cual lo convierte en la institución educativa más sostenible en América Latina. Su Planta de Tratamiento de Aguas Residuales (PTAR), el sistema mecánico de renovación continua de aire en cada una de las aulas, la utilización de materiales orgánicos y saludables (pinturas, maderas, etc…) dentro de los edificios, los paneles solares para la optimización del uso de energía, las luces LED en todo el campus, las huertas y entornos naturales que se convierten en aulas vivas para el aprendizaje de los ecosistemas y los diferentes proyectos de conservación, educación y solidaridad, liderados por la Fundación Educativa Rochester (FER), en los que los estudiantes se convierten en los principales protagonistas en el uso del campus como texto vivo, son el mayor testimonio de dicho compromiso. “La educación es la clave para transformar nuestra forma de vida. Hoy, más que nunca, debemos sembrar en los niños y los jóvenes la cultura de una vida sostenible, donde plantar árboles, trabajar con energías renovables o reciclar, resulten tareas naturales. Esa es nuestra misión en el Colegio Rochester”, comenta Juan Pablo Aljure.

Hoy en día, es vital conocer y manejar las tecnologías y las herramientas que están puestas a disposición de todos, pero esto requiere un manejo responsable para no otorgarles el poder equivocado. El Colegio Rochester, gracias la visión de la Presidencia, la ejecución de la Rectora y el acompañamiento de Natalia León, Digital LearningConsultant, ha hecho grandes esfuerzos e inversiones para estar a la vanguardia en tecnología, permitiendo que todos los estudiantes, incluidos los más pequeños, tengan la capacidad de abrir la ventana hacia ese mundo de infinitas posibilidades, pero siempre con criterios éticos desde la ciudadanía digital. Acciones como el programa “Trae tu propio dispositivo”, el cual se implementó de 3º a 11º Grado en agosto de 2019; la capacitación digital que se ha brindado a los maestros para lograr hoy en día tener el 90% de los educadores certificados como Apple Teachers, y el uso de plataformas digitales de aprendizaje que se han venido implementando por años en el colegio, han sido no solo una tabla de salvación con la llegada inesperada de la virtualidad, sino que también se convierten en uno de los pasaportes para que los estudiantes viajen por el mundo, físico y virtual, con tranquilidad y desenvolvimiento.
Otra de las credenciales indispensables cuando se habla de “tener el mundo en mente”, son los idiomas. Hace seis décadas, las fundadoras tenían claro que el Inglés era un idioma fundamental en una sociedad global; hoy en día, el Francés y el Portugués forman parte del currículo del colegio, ya que el aprendizaje de otras lenguas es la herramienta más versátil para descubrir y entender diferentes culturas, tener apertura hacia el diálogo y la reconciliación, y ser capaces de moverse con naturalidad en un mundo cambiante y globalizado. Preguntas esenciales como, “¿Cómo podemos solucionar problemas actuales, como las guerras, las migraciones y las enfermedades?”, se formulan a diario desde los currículos de idiomas y la Directora Académica de los grados 4º a 11º, y Directora Curricular de Inglés, Dana Pao, manifiesta que “los colegios tienen como rol central el desarrollo de la sociedad, generando en los estudiantes las competencias y habilidades para moverse en un mundo globalizado donde deben estar abiertos al diálogo ya escuchar y entender las perspectivas y creencias de los demás. Para ello, lo primero es entender su lenguaje, el verbal y no verbal”.
Siguiendo con aquella visión de una educación integral de las fundadoras, el desarrollo del arte en todas sus manifestaciones y el deporte con sus múltiples posibilidades, continúan siendo un pilar fundamental en el colegio, el cualcuenta con el Centro Artístico Inspira, una cancha de fútbol, 4 canchas polideportivas y 2 piscinas. El Centro Artístico, liderado por Iliana Aljure, Bacterióloga de la Universidadd e los Andes, con Maestría en Educación de la Danza de la Universidad de Nueva York y Certificada en Pedagogía Compatible con el Cerebro del Jensen Learning Corporation,quien ha trabajado durante 34 años en pro del desarrollo artístico de los estudiantes, tanto en las áreas curriculares como en las extracurriculares, ofrece espacios de formación para estudiantes y maestros, impulsando procesos de creación e innovación artística, desde actividades recreativas como de alto rendimiento en danza, música, teatro y artes visuales. El Centro Acuático aloja dos piscinas para grandes y chicos, pues la práctica de la natación ha sido siempre una prioridad desde sus fundadoras; el calentamiento de las mismas se hace mediante paneles solares logrando el ahorro energético que se deseaba con el cambio en el 2012 a esta nueva sede. Sus canchas múltiples para la práctica de baloncesto, futbol y voleibol, son ejemplos de la especial atención que se le presta al deporte. El colegio considera esencial el desarrollo de talentos artísticos y deportivos para fomentar el balance cognitivo, social, emocional, físico y espiritual de sus estudiantes, lo cual incide significativamente en la salud integral.
Por último, tener el mundo en mente significa que ni el planeta, ni los problemas del mundo, ni de los demás, son responsables de nuestra felicidad. A partir de la Teoría de la Elección, desarrollada por el psiquiatra estadounidense,William Glasser, hemos aprendido a elegir y mantenerrelaciones saludables con quienes nos rodean y con nuestro ambiente natural, para construir una vida donde la felicidad y la salud mental sean nuestra prioridad.
¡Felicitaciones Colegio Rochester en su cumpleaños No. 63! No en vano, a través de su historia, ha recibido múltiples condecoraciones y reconocimientos del gobierno y diversas entidades.
