Liderar con el corazón: Carlos Mauricio Gutiérrez (2013)

Carlos Mauricio Gutiérrez Luna, egresado del Colegio Rochester (promoción 2013), ha construido una carrera profesional comprometida con el servicio, la justicia social y la transformación de entornos marcados por el conflicto armado. Es profesional en Relaciones Internacionales con concentración en Seguridad y Conflicto Internacional, cuenta con una maestría en Derecho Internacional Humanitario, una especialización en Gobierno y Asuntos Públicos, y actualmente cursa una segunda maestría en Gobierno y Políticas Públicas. Además, es consultor certificado en derechos humanos por el US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights.

Desde hace varios años, su vocación lo ha llevado a trabajar en territorios profundamente afectados por la violencia. En su rol como consultor en derechos humanos y Derecho Internacional Humanitario, ha participado en proyectos investigativos con la Organización de Estados Americanos y ha brindado asistencia técnica en programas de desminado humanitario con organizaciones como Bomb Techs Without Borders, en contextos tan diversos como Tumaco (Colombia) y Ucrania.

“Escuchar los testimonios de niños, campesinos y familias afectadas por las minas antipersonales ha sido uno de los mayores retos de mi vida. Es un golpe emocional constante, pero también una fuente de fuerza que me recuerda por qué decidí dedicarme a esta causa”, afirma.

Por su trayectoria y compromiso con el bienestar de las comunidades, Carlos Mauricio fue reconocido con la Orquídea de Oro del Congreso de la República. Sin embargo, para él, los logros más significativos no son los títulos ni los premios, sino la posibilidad de trabajar cada día con propósito y contribuir de manera concreta a la construcción de paz desde la sociedad civil.

Carlos recuerda con especial cariño su paso por el Colegio Rochester. “Fuimos la primera promoción que se graduó en la nueva sede. Con Juan Pablo Aljure como director, aprendimos a pensar en grande, a tomar el control de nuestras vidas con el mundo en mente. En el colegio nos enseñaron que la autonomía, el trabajo en equipo y la salud integral no eran solo conceptos, sino prácticas vivas”.

Destaca también la influencia de docentes que marcaron su camino, como la profesora Patricia Muñetón, quien desde el coro vocal le enseñó el poder de la disciplina, la expresión y la confianza en sí mismo, y el profesor Walter Duarte, quien lo motivó a dominar el inglés como herramienta de liderazgo y conexión global.

“En el Rochester aprendí que la excelencia no es competir con los demás, sino superarse a uno mismo con propósito. Que liderar es servir, y que servir no es solo ayudar, sino actuar desde la empatía y el compromiso”.

Hoy, Carlos Mauricio representa una generación de egresados que entiende el liderazgo como una forma de actuar con coherencia y visión de largo plazo. “Veo a mis compañeros convertirse en médicos, abogados, emprendedores sociales, artistas, investigadores… todos con algo en común: actuamos con conciencia social y sentido global. Eso nos lo enseñó el colegio”.

Su historia es un testimonio vivo de los valores del Colegio Rochester: la autonomía, la colaboración, la responsabilidad, la salud integral y el aprendizaje con propósito. Porque cuando una educación se basa en el ser, el impacto trasciende lo individual y se convierte en cambio real para el mundo.

Leading With Your Heart: Carlos Mauricio Gutiérrez (2013)

Carlos Mauricio Gutiérrez Luna, a 2013 graduate of Rochester School, has built a professional career committed to service, social justice, and the transformation of environments marked by armed conflict. He holds a degree in International Relations with a concentration in Security and International Conflict, a master’s degree in International Humanitarian Law, a specialization in Government and Public Affairs, and is currently pursuing a second master’s in Government and Public Policy. In addition, he is a certified human rights consultant by the US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights.

For several years, his vocation has led him to work in territories deeply affected by violence. In his role as a consultant on human rights and international humanitarian law, he has participated in research projects with the Organization of American States and has provided technical assistance in humanitarian demining programs with organizations such as Bomb Techs Without Borders, in contexts as diverse as Tumaco (Colombia) and Ukraine.

"Listening to the testimonies of children, farmers, and families affected by anti-personnel mines has been one of the greatest challenges of my life. It is a constant emotional blow, but also a source of strength that reminds me why I decided to dedicate myself to this cause," he says.

For his career and commitment to the well-being of communities, Carlos Mauricio was recognized with the Golden Orchid Award from the Congress of the Republic. However, for him, the most significant achievements are not titles or awards, but the opportunity to work every day with purpose and contribute in a concrete way to peacebuilding from civil society.

Carlos remembers his time at Rochester School with particular fondness. "We were the first class to graduate from the new campus. With Juan Pablo Aljure as principal, we learned to think big, to take control of our lives with the world in mind. At school, we were taught that autonomy, teamwork, and holistic health were not just concepts, but living practices."

He also highlights the influence of teachers who shaped his path, such as Professor Patricia Muñetón, who taught him the power of discipline, expression, and self-confidence through the vocal choir, and Professor Walter Duarte, who motivated him to master English as a tool for leadership and global connection.

"At Rochester, I learned that excellence is not about competing with others, but about purposefully surpassing oneself. That to lead is to serve, and that to serve is not only to help, but to act with empathy and commitment."

Today, Carlos Mauricio represents a generation of graduates who understand leadership as a way of acting with consistency and long-term vision. "I see my classmates becoming doctors, lawyers, social entrepreneurs, artists, researchers... all with something in common: we act with social awareness and a global perspective. That's what school taught us."

His story is a living testimony to the values of Rochester School: autonomy, collaboration, responsibility, holistic health, and purposeful learning. Because when an education is based on being, the impact transcends the individual and becomes real change for the world.
