This week has been full of exciting activities for our PK students. We celebrated the Chinese New Year with a Dragon Dance party where all students wore a red T-shirt and red accessories for good luck and fortune. They learned about the Dragon and Lion Dances, recognizing their differences and purposes. It was also an opportunity to make reference to some of our school virtues: Leadership and Cooperation.
We also learned about the Chinese Zodiac’s animals through stories and a wonderful Tai Chi master class with Sifu Dalio Cervera. In this master class, students learned about integral health. In Chinese tradition, the dragon represents our mind, the tiger our heart, and our body is the vehicle for physical health.
This Lunar Year celebration is part of our PK integrated project: It’s a Small World, where students have learned about Mexico, the USA, and are now exploring China. Through crafts, stories, music, and dance, students have learned about Chinese animals such as the panda, the tiger, and the golden monkey, as well as some mythological creatures such as the Chinese dragon, a symbol of luck and good fortune for its people, and Nian the monster. By exploring China, students have learned new English vocabulary related to wild animals, colors, food, and most importantly they have submerged themselves in a culture that is new to them. They have been able to work on fine motor skills, reading, listening, and speaking while having lots of fun. With this project, our main goal is to give our youngest students a new perspective about the world and provide them with an opportunity to become sensitive to other languages and traditions other than their own. We are creating awareness of multiculturalism so that our students can understand that they are citizens of the world!
