The TOEFL iBT®—Demonstrating Excellence in Language Competence at Rochester School

To help our high school students prepare for the university admissions process in their Senior year and for future work opportunities, we require students to take the TOEFL iBT® standardized English language proficiency test. This test is accepted by more than 11,000 universities and other institutions in over 150 countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, and across Europe and Asia. It measures all four (4) academic English skills — reading, listening, speaking, and writing—the way they are actually used in a classroom and the real world.

The scores for each of the four sections of the exam are assessed against English Learning Expectations for Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, and each of these scores is converted to our Rochester grading system.

An average total score on the exam is about 90, ranging between 85 and 95. A score of 100 or above for a high school student indicates that s/he has achieved a C1 proficiency level according to the Common European Framework (CEFR). We would like to recognize the following Class of 2022 Seniors who scored 100+:

Juan Camilo Jiménez scored a perfect 30/30 on the Reading section, which is considered one of the most difficult sections.

Resumen: Para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes de bachillerato a prepararse para el proceso de admisión a la universidad en su último año y para futuras oportunidades laborales, requerimos que los estudiantes tomen el examen estandarizado de dominio del idioma inglés TOEFL iBT®.

Esta prueba es aceptada por más de 11,000 universidades y otras instituciones en más de 150 países, incluidos Australia, Canadá, Nueva Zelanda, Estados Unidos, el Reino Unido y en toda Europa y Asia. Mide las 4 habilidades académicas del inglés (lectura, comprensión auditiva, expresión oral y escritura) de la forma en que se utilizan en el aula y el mundo real.

Cada uno de estos puntajes se convierte a nuestro sistema de calificación de Rochester. Una puntuación total promedio en el examen es de aproximadamente 90, que oscila entre 85 y 95. Juan Camilo Jiménez obtuvo una puntuación perfecta de 30/30 en la parte de lectura, la cual se considera una de las partes más difíciles del examen.
